Peace Pole Donated by La Jolla Golden Triangle Rotary Club installed at The Preuss School UC San Diego

April 21, 2022 - San Diego, California:  Recent events in Ukraine and Afghanistan serve as a continuing reminder that war, conflict, and oppression have a continued impact on the lives of all global citizens.  During such times, it is important to remember that peace has been a shared human goal throughout history and that all communities and societies strive to achieve peace.

Rotary is a global organization that believes in the concept of “Service Above Self” and whose mission is to provide service to others, promote integrity, and advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace through its fellowship of business, professional, and community leaders.  To help promote the concept of peace, the La Jolla Golden Triangle Rotary Club, through its Peace Committee, donated a peace pole that became part of a newly created zen garden on the campus of The Preuss School UC San Diego.

The project has been a cooperative effort between members of the La Jolla Golden Triangle Rotary Club and The Preuss School’s Interact Club.  The words “May Peace Prevail on Earth” are inscribed on the pole in eight different languages, the choice of which was made by the students and reflects some of the languages spoken by Preuss families.

According to La Jolla Golden Triangle Rotary Club President, Jacquie Reilly, “Our club has had a longstanding relationship with the Preuss School and we have had the pleasure of supporting its students for a number of years.  We could think of no better way to help support the student community and to promote the goal of peace than by helping the students create a special space at their school where they can contemplate how to advance the cause of peace in their communities and the world at large.”

The project started in the winter of 2019-2020 but was delayed due to COVID-19.  With the help of retired teacher, Eric Romer, and Tamima Noorzay of UCSD, the project was finally able to be completed and was presented to the Preuss community on Thursday, April 21, 2022.
