WINTER '26: THE COMING STORMS
Sep 04, 2026
WINTER '26: THE COMING STORMSVeteran Union-Tribune reporter Gary Robbins will discuss some of the ways that the U-T is preparing for El Nino coverage this fall/winter, and how it will collaborate with first responders. About Gary RobbinsMaine native Gary Robbins decided to become a newspaper reporter in December 1972 when he saw His Girl Friday, a comedic newspaper movie starring Cary Grant and Rosalind Russell. About a month later, a weekly newspaper debuted near his home outside Bar Harbor, Maine. He asked its editor for a shot at writing and got it. Robbins went on to journalism school at Northeastern University in Boston. In 1980, he joined an afternoon newspaper in Hollywood, Florida and covered, among other things, the Cuban boat lift and Haitian boatlift. He later moved on to the Orange County Register, where he spent 25 years as a science and technology writer. He joined The San Diego Union-Tribune in 2010 and now covers science and research universities, the military and the weather. Robbins was a Knight Science Fellow at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He later taught journalism at USC and Cal State Long Beach. He is married to Diana McCabe, the U-T's business editor. They have a cat, Sweet Pea, who basically does nothing 35 hours a day. |

Artificial Intelligence: Do Not Be Afraid. Knowledge is Power.
Sep 18, 2026
Artificial Intelligence: Do Not Be Afraid. Knowledge is Power.Samson Marcos Tse is a software engineer who has spent his whole life in California and still managed to move constantly: raised on computers, he has called San Diego, Los Angeles, and San Francisco home, collecting traffic complaints and tech jobs in every one of them. He was there for the last AI rush, building systems at IBM Watson, and he is here for the current one, leading engineering efforts at Unity Technologies, where he helped build the Unity Rewards platform used by players around the world. Along the way he has cofounded a startup, designed backend systems that process billions of transactions a day, taught kids to code, and built games purely for the fun of it, proof that a decade in the industry has not entirely ruined his sense of play. Samson describes himself as an AI expert, but not an expert on AI, a distinction he promises to explain. A dedicated Rotarian who has led numerous service projects across his community, he believes technology belongs to everyone willing to learn it. His message is simple: do not be afraid. Knowledge is power. |
